What adobe CS5 software is used to create web graphics such as tabs, buttons, background, textboxes, etc?

I am working on a webpage and i now want to create some custom tabs and a custom background image (simple patterns with an alpha transperency). I am readily open to spend days learning a new software, so i want to know which one to start out on. Do I use photoshop, fireworks, illustrator? i don't know! thanks
